Obituary for Arlene Jeanette Bailey

Arlene Bailey -- Mother, Grandmother, former mail carrier and librarian

Arlene Bailey of North Street in Arcade died on April 16, 2019 at the Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home in Springville at the age of 93.

Arlene Jeanette Gibbon was born in Kenmore, NY on October 3, 1925. She was the youngest child of John and Maude (Griffith) Gibbon and grew up in Kenmore, Elton and Arcade. In high school she was a talented French horn player and singer. After graduating from Arcade Central School in 1942 at the age of 16, she worked for the L.R. Brass grocery store in Arcade. After turning 18, she went to work at a Curtiss Wright airplane plant in Buffalo and helped build C-46 cargo planes for the U.S. Army Air Force. After World War II ended in August 1945, she returned to Arcade and worked as a mail carrier until she married.

On April 25, 1947 in Arcade, Arlene married George Rix, Jr. While her three sons were growing up, Arlene was a homemaker and worked a variety of part-time jobs, including on the assembly line at Motorola, as a cashier in the Arcade Central School cafeteria, and as a librarian at the Arcade Public Library. Arlene was also a Cub Scout den mother and actively assisted her husband George when he was the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 55 in Arcade.

Arlene was an excellent cook who claimed to dislike cooking. She was also a talented pianist and church organist, and she was known for her kindness and her eagerness to make new friends. She loved kids, dogs, watching the birds at her birdfeeders and sending greeting cards on all occasions to friends and family. Arlene was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Arcade. She was proud of her Welsh ancestry, and she enjoyed watching her grandkids and great-grandkids perform in plays, recitals and concerts.

In addition to her parents, Arlene was predeceased by her first husband, George Rix, Jr., who died in 1976, and her second husband, John Bailey, whom she married in 1978 and who died in 1987. She was also preceded in death by her youngest son, John Rix, who died in 2006, by a stepdaughter, Ann Bailey Wallace Sugg, and by and her elder siblings: Elizabeth (Ronald) Nye, Norman (Beatrice) Gibbon, and Gilbert Gibbon. Arlene is survived by her sons, Philip Rix of Arcade and Kevin (Diane) Rix of Elmira, and by two stepsons, Fred (late Cindy) Bailey and Rich (Candy) Bailey, both of Arcade. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Doris Gibbon, and by 4 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren, 6 step-great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a very special, dear friend of over twenty years, Edward Redding of Yorkshire.

Friends may call on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the W.S. Davis Funeral Home, 358 Main St., Arcade where a Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 19, 2019 at 11 AM. Rev. James Yansick will officiate. Arlene will be laid to rest alongside George Rix, Jr., in Freedom Cemetery in Freedom, NY.

Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wyoming County SPCA or any other reputable animal adoption or rescue organization, or to the Arcade Fire Department.
