Margaret Catherine Walter passed away peacefully on July 30, 2019 at the age of 104 at the Wyoming County Nursing Facility in Warsaw.
Margaret was born on April 4, 1915 to Benjamin and Irene (Bebe) Cook in the town of Freedom. She was the oldest alumni of Arcade Central School who graduated in 1932 and then attended Geneseo Teacher’s College. Margaret Cook married Norman Charles Walter and had two sons, Peter Charles and Edward John. She was a substitute teacher at St. Pius Catholic School in Delevan and a member of the Arcade Central School Board from 1957-1966. That school board made history when they moved forward to merge three schools into what is now the Pioneer Central School District. She was widowed in 1960 and shortly after began a career at the Bank of Delevan (currently M & T Bank) of which she retired in 1985. In 1986 she began volunteering five days a week at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw until the age of 98 and has received many “Volunteer of the Year” awards during that time. Margaret loved to travel and was active in snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Those at Rushford Lake would marvel at her graceful presence on water skis even at the age of 80!
She is survived by her son, Edward John (Mimi Lee) Walter of San Francisco, daughter-in-law – Carol (nee Benzel) Walter of East Concord; grandsons Scott (Diane) and Craig (Sarah) Walter and several generations of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Margaret is preceded in death by her husband Norman Charles Walter, son Peter Charles Walter who died June 5, 2018 and her sister Agnes C (Cook) Byroads .
There will be no prior visitation. Those wishing to donate in Margaret’s honor may give to the Arcade Rescue Squad.
