Obituary

Bernard Riley Whaley of Java Village, NY, age 83, born October 14, 1935, passed September 7, 2019. He was the son of Clarence and Mabel (Winch) Whaley. Bernard spent his early school years at Java School District #1 in Java Village. Upon completion of Elementary School, Bernard transferred to Arcade Central School where he graduated from High School in 1954. Upon graduation, Bernard joined the US Army, spending six months in Fort Knox, KY and Columbia, NC. By way of the US Maurice Rose, a WWII troop ship, he found himself in Germany (Kirch-goens, Ulm, Nuremburg) for the next two years.

Shortly after returning home in 1956, Bernard enrolled in Florida Southern College. Continuing his education at NYS University at Buffalo (UB), he graduated with high distinction with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business. Eight years later Bernard enrolled in the business school at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). He graduated in 1973 with a Masters of Business Administration Degree (MBA).

On September 19, 1959, Carol Treusdell of Belfast and Bernard were married. Their children are: Jacquelyn Whaley (James) of Rochester, NY, Kathleen Whaley of Spencerport, NY and David Whaley (Paula) of Scottsdale, AZ. Grandchildren include: Jason Ellinwood (Lynn) of Mumford, NY, Joel Ellinwood (Catherine) of Rochester, NY and Maria Titone of Indianapolis, IN. Great grandchildren include: Tristan and Autumn Ellinwood of Mumford, NY and Joel Ellinwood Jr. of Rochester, NY.

After graduation from UB in 1962, Bernard was employed by the US General Accounting Office in Washington, DC, as an auditor/investigator. This employment necessitated extensive US and international travel including several months in New Delhi, India.

In 1968, Bernard left the government service and joined the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, NY as a financial analyst. His work there required an evaluation of capital expenditures to ensure the return on investment complied with expected company standards. In 1991, Bernard laid down his professional working tools and returned to his childhood home in Java Village.

On June 9, 1958, Bernard was initiated into the Mt. Vernon Lodge #263 of Free and Accepted Masons in Java Village. After occupying each office, he was elected as Master of the Lodge in 2001 and 2002. In 2013, he was appointed as NYS Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of Denmark.

Friends may call on the family from 4-8 pm on Saturday, Sept 14 at W. S. Davis Funeral Home, Inc., 358 W. Main St., Arcade where a Masonic Service will be held at 6:30 pm. Funeral services will be held on Sunday Sept 15 at 1 pm at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Java Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given through the Masonic Lodge to the Military Outreach of the Batavia Veterans Administration. A check, addressed to Mount Vernon Lodge #263 (Memo/For: Bernard Whaley), may be sent to 5438 Michigan Rd, Arcade, NY 14009 for transmittal to the Batavia VA.

Carol,
I am saddened to hear that Bernie has passed away. Like Marge I also worked with Bernie at Kodak where he was my first supervisor. He taught me a lot about the working world including how to dodge misoriented bullets. Those were great years at Kodak. I have many fond memories of those years including social events where I first met you. I will carry my great memories of Bernie the rest of my life
