Obituary

William Landahl Jr., longtime fire volunteer and EMS leader

William Landahl Jr. of Arcade passed away Monday, April 27, 2020 at Buffalo General Hospital. He was 85.

Born June 23, 1934 in Elma NY, Bill was a son of William Sr. and Ella Roloff Landahl. He met the love of his life, the former Kathryn Hunt, as a young man, and the couple were wed in Holland on February 10, 1956. They were together 64 years, and raised their family of three in the Village of Arcade.

For 35 years, Bill worked in the shipping and receiving department at Fisher-Price in East Aurora. He retired in 1990 and went on to work for First Student Bus Garage in Delevan for 20 years.

A 50-year member of the Arcade Fire Department and Rescue Squad, he also served for 30-plus years as First Aid Captain. Bill’s office desk and walls show off the many accolades and awards he received for his community service and dedication, including having been named Man of the Year by the Arcade Area Chamber of Commerce.

For the past few years, Bill also worked at W.S. Davis in Arcade. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife Kathy; his sons Robert (Sheri) Landahl of Canandaigua and James (Jana) Landahl of Arcade; and six grandchildren, Brian (Laura) Landahl of Raleigh NC, Lissa (Garth Boldt)) Landahl of Freedom, Kevin (Martina) Landahl of Caledonia, Kelsey (Kevin) Levine of Philadelphia, Justin (Rachel) Tillow of West Valley and Alesia (Andy) Ackerman of Arcade. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren: Leah, Levi William, Jacob, Hadleigh and Sonny and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by a daughter, Deboria, and his brothers, George Landahl, Ralph Landahl, and Kenneth (Gladys) Landahl, and a sister, Amelia “Sue” (Paul) Allan. A sister-in-law, Lois Landahl, also survives.

There will be no prior visitation. A celebration of Bill’s life will be announced at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Arcade Fire Department.

Dear Kathy, I just realized that you may not know that I took my maiden name back and that you knew me as Mary Rhoads.

Dear Kathy, I am so saddened by this. Using all the words that I have is still an insufficient way to really communicate how good and kind and sweet and generous he was to his family, friends, neighbors, and the community. He was a gentle man and he was a gentleman.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Kathy and family. Bill was always there to help us and make us smile, he was a very special man and will be deeply missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to your whole family during this time. He was always there for the community and students on the buses. We are very thankful we came to know him. We appreciated all the times he helped our family and was on the ambulance squad. May God be with you, Dan and Peggy Cass
